SOMERVILLE GARDEN SANCTUARY

SOMERVILLE, MA

This Somerville garden was thoughtfully transformed both above and below ground. The homeowners envisioned a lush, private retreat for quiet evenings together, as well as a welcoming space where their older children could gather with friends.

Ongoing soil erosion and stormwater runoff onto the nearby bike path informed the design. An underground cistern was installed to gently manage water and allow it to return safely to the surrounding landscape.

The backyard is defined by Corten steel raised beds and horizontal cedar fencing, adding warmth, structure, and year-round interest. A winding path connects three distinct areas—a meditation circle, firepit, and dining space—creating a natural flow through the garden.

A mostly native, shade-tolerant perennial palette supports the site’s dappled light and enhances its calm, natural character.
