Experienced Part-Time Gardener / Sustainable Landscape Design Assistant
Boston–Cambridge Area
We are a small, sustainable design-driven landscape and garden business focused on creating ecologically healthy, beautiful outdoor spaces rooted in native plants, sustainable practices, and naturalistic design. We are seeking an experienced, thoughtful gardener to join us on a part-time basis!
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys both hands-on garden work and design thinking, and who values working with living systems over rigid formulas.
ABOUT THE ROLE
You will work in established and developing residential gardens throughout the Boston and Cambridge area, supporting installation, maintenance, and design implementation. Projects range from small urban gardens to more expansive landscapes, all approached through a sustainable and ecological lens.
This is a collaborative role with room for growth, responsibility, and creative input.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will have:
-
At least 2 years of professional gardening or landscape experience
-
Strong knowledge of native plants appropriate to New England
-
Hands-on experience with sustainable gardening practices (soil health, low-input systems, ecological maintenance)
-
Working knowledge of permaculture principles and systems thinking
-
Design skills — able to read plans, understand spatial relationships, and contribute ideas in the field
-
Comfort working independently and as part of a small team
-
Physical ability to perform garden work in outdoor conditions
-
Reliable transportation within the Boston area
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Beyond skills, we value someone who is:
-
Curious and observant
-
Detail-oriented but flexible
-
Respectful of plants, clients, and the pace of living systems
-
Interested in long-term ecological outcomes, not just short-term aesthetics
SCHEDULE AND COMPENSATION
-
Part-time, with hours varying seasonally - we can create a schedule together.
-
Competitive hourly pay, commensurate with experience
-
Opportunity for increased responsibility and expanded role over time
HOW TO APPLY
Please send:
-
A brief introduction
-
A summary of your relevant experience
-
Any photos, portfolio samples, or descriptions of gardens or projects you’ve worked on (if available)
We look forward to working with someone who shares a commitment to thoughtful, sustainable landscape and garden design. Thanks so much!
